Are You a Christian Who Wants EMDR — But Isn’t Sure It’s Right for Your Faith?
You’ve done your research. You’ve heard that EMDR works. You know people who have been transformed by it. But you have questions.
Is it compatible with my Christian faith? Does it involve anything New Age or spiritual that conflicts with what I believe? Can prayer and Scripture be part of the process? Will my therapist understand where I’m coming from?
These are exactly the right questions to ask. And we want to answer them honestly.
At Paraclete Counseling, we are licensed, EMDR-trained therapists and committed Christians. We believe God heals, and we believe He has given us tools to help in that healing. EMDR is one of them.
EMDR: A Tool God Gave Us to Process What We Can’t Get Past on Our Own
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It is a clinically proven, research-backed therapy that helps the brain process painful or distressing memories that have gotten “stuck.”
When something overwhelming happens, the brain sometimes can’t fully process it. God made our nervous system to evaluate everything as either safe or unsafe. When we experience a traumatic (unsafe) event, the nervous system and brain become “on guard” in order to protect the person.
That unprocessed distressing memory stays lodged in the nervous system and the body, and years later, a sight, a sound, or a situation can make your body react as if the danger is still happening. These memories affect how you think, feel, and relate to God and others. EMDR helps the brain reprocess those memories so they no longer carry that same weight.
It uses bilateral stimulation, guided eye movements, tapping, or sounds to help the brain do something it is already designed to do: process and heal.
This is based on the same process that happens when we sleep. Based on God’s amazing design, rapid eye movements help the brain process memories every night when you are asleep. This same bilateral stimulation is used during EMDR therapy. There is nothing mystical or New Age about the mechanism. It is science working with the brain God created.
Think of it this way: the brain is wired to heal, just like the body heals from a physical wound. EMDR supports that process when the brain gets stuck and healing has stalled.
EMDR helps your brain:
Reprocess painful memories
Reduce emotional distress
Replace lies with truth
Restore a sense of peace and stability
Many clients experience relief faster than with traditional talk therapy alone.
This is one of the most important questions Christian clients ask, and it’s a valid one.
Yes. Here’s Why EMDR and Christian Faith Are Deeply Compatible.
EMDR is not spiritual or religious in nature. It is a clinical, neurological tool. It is brain-based treatment for trauma, based on how God designed the brain to heal.
When people go through a distressing event, they come to believe certain lies about themselves, the world or God because of that event. Part of the EMDR process involves identifying negative cognitions and replacing them with positive cognitions.
WHY CHRISTIANS SOMETIMES STAY STUCK
Many faithful Christians feel frustrated because:
“I’ve prayed about this for years.”
“I know the truth, but I don’t feel it.”
“I still react the same way, no matter what I believe.”
As counselors, we have noticed that many people can identify lies they believe but no matter how much work they do in trying to replace lies with truth, they are stuck in believing the lies.
This is because the unprocessed memories are stuck in the emotional, fear center of the brain. This chronic fight-or-flight state keeps a person from believing new truths.
This isn’t a failure of faith.
Trauma and emotional pain are often stored in parts of the brain that are not changed by logic or belief alone.
That’s where EMDR can help.
It allows your brain to process what your heart already knows, so truth becomes something you experience, not just something you try to believe.
At Paraclete Counseling, we see EMDR as a tool that:
Supports the renewing of the mind
Helps change lies and negative beliefs to truth-based beliefs
Allows clients to more fully receive what they already believe
You are not replacing God in the healing process.
You are addressing the wounds that may be blocking your ability to live in truth, peace, and freedom.
Psalm 34:18 tells us, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
At Paraclete, Your Faith Is Part of the Process
We can incorporate prayer before and after sessions. We can ask God to lead the process of helping us discern which traumatic memories need to be processed. We can use Scripture-based positive beliefs during the installation phase. We can process through a faith lens when that feels meaningful to you. Or we can simply provide expert clinical EMDR care in an environment where your therapist shares your worldview. The choice is always yours.
What can EMDR help with?
EMDR may be right for you if you are experiencing
EMDR may be right for you if you are experiencing:
• Trauma or PTSD from abuse, accidents, loss, or a painful past
• Anxiety, panic attacks, or fears that feel out of proportion
• Spiritual wounds or church hurt
• Childhood trauma or neglect that still affects your relationships today
• Betrayal trauma from infidelity or broken trust
• Grief that has not resolved
• Chronic shame, self-blame, or negative beliefs about yourself
• Feeling stuck despite years of therapy, prayer, or trying to “move forward”
EMDR helps you do more than manage symptoms. It helps your brain actually finish processing what happened, so the memory loses its power over you.
